Mission Statement from the IB |
|---|
The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
Curriculum Framework |
|---|
The Primary Years Programme (PYP) offers a transdisciplinary, inquiry-based and student-centered edcuation with responsible action at its core, enabling students to learn between, across and beyond traditional subject boundaries.
The transdisciplinary model extends across all three pillars of the PYP curriculum framework—the learner, learning and teaching, and the learning community.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: |
|---|
What exactly is inquiry learning?
Inquiry learning is an approach where students learn by asking questions, exploring, and investigating. Instead of just listening to facts, students are encouraged to think for themselves, ask questions, and solve problems. This method helps them become more curious and confident learners.
What are the benefits of IB and inquiry learning?
IB and inquiry learning help students develop important skills, like thinking critically, communicating well, and working in teams. These are valuable skills that go beyond memorizing facts—they prepare children for success in life. Research shows that IB students are more engaged, independent, and better prepared to face future challenges. The IB program is known worldwide for creating thoughtful, responsible, and compassionate global citizens.
Will my child still learn what they need to know?
The answer is YES and even more. All teachers at OLA follow the Alberta curriculum as their guideline. Your students' learning may look a little different from what you are used to -- for example, one unit may be very heavy in science but lacking in social studies, and another may be more heavily focused on social studies. But as with all schools in Alberta, our teachers will cover all learner outcomes in the Alberta curriculum during the school year.
What about important basic skills such as math, reading, and writing?
The IB PYP fully includes core skills like math, reading, and writing. These foundational subjects are carefully integrated into our inquiry-based approach, so students don’t just learn the basics—they learn to apply them in real-life situations. For example, students might solve math problems related to a project or read and write about topics they’re curious about. This way, they build strong academic skills while developing a deeper understanding. With inquiry, the "basics" are not abandoned; they’re taught in a way that makes learning more engaging, meaningful, and lasting. In addition, teachers have the freedom to teach some important skills, such as phonics and basic math facts, outside the unit of inquiry, as some teaching just requires direct instruction!
Is this program valuable if my child doesn't go on to an IB junior or high school?
Yes, absolutely! The skills learned in the IB PYP are beneficial in any school environment. Inquiry learning and the emphasis on understanding and critical thinking set a strong foundation for any type of learning. Whether students continue with IB in the future or not, they will gain valuable tools to succeed in all schools and life situations.
Will my child be at a disadvantage after completing this program and moving on to junior high?
Students who complete the IB PYP are often more prepared for junior high. They have strong study skills, confidence, and a solid foundation in critical thinking. Many studies show that IB students adapt well to new environments because they know how to ask questions, manage their time, and work independently. This sets them up for success in any junior high program.
How does the IB fit in with our Catholic faith?
At OLA, our faith is the foundation of all we do. The IB PYP is a natural extension of our Catholic beliefs. It emphasizes values like respect, compassion, integrity, and a commitment to making a positive difference in the world—principles we hold dear as a Catholic community. The program encourages students to care for others, act with empathy, and reflect on their actions, which connects deeply with Catholic teachings. Through IB, students learn to be responsible, caring individuals who seek to live out their faith by serving others and making ethical, thoughtful choices in all areas of life.
I have more questions. How can I get them answered?
Many ways! The easiest is to speak to your child's teacher or to reach out to the school's PYP Coordinator, Ms Swark. There are also many websites for parents that explain the IB in simplified terms. Some of our favorites are:
- International Baccalaureate Official Website provides a quick fact sheet for parents
- Beijing International School has a great summary of the PYP
- Inspiring Inquiry has a large selection of resources explaining the PYP, some aimed at teachers and some at parents
- Wondering what motivates us? Why we are working on IB? If you like research, here is a link to the IB's research page.
For more information into what that may look like, please take a look at our programme of inquiry! Remember that this is a living document, constantly being tweaked and edited by OLA staff as we strive to refine our programme and better serve our families.

French At OLA
All students from grade 1 onward will have the opportunity to learn French. Students in grades 4-6 will receive 90 minutes of French instruction following the Alberta curriculum. Students in grade 1-3 will receive 30 minutes of dedicated French instruction weekly plus integrate some language learning in their classrooms. Because the Alberta curriculum does not cover language learners of this age, we have created our own scope and sequence of grade 1-3 learning outcomes modelled after the Alberta curriculum and in accordance with the IB language scope and sequence. You can view this document to see what your child will learn by clicking here.
The Learner Profile
The learner profile illustrates the characteristics all IB schools strive to reach, teach, and uphold. They are at the core of our teaching.
